German Climate Activist – Anja Windl- Faces Expulsion from Austria Amid Two-Year Ban

Anja Windl, a German climate activist, faces a two-year ban in Austria. The Federal Office for Immigration and Asylum cited her actions as a danger to public order. Known for her bold protests, Windl has one month to leave Austria, where she’s lived for seven years.

Windl, called “Climate Shakira,” has been a key figure in Austria’s climate movement. Her activism has drawn both praise and criticism. The BFA’s ruling, confirmed by her lawyer, is seen as a threat to political dissent in the EU.

Austria’s interior ministry defended the ban, saying they followed a strict review process. They didn’t comment on Windl’s case. Last Generation Austria, known for dramatic actions, dissolved last year due to legal issues. Windl plans to appeal if she’s deported, possibly taking it to the federal court.

This case shows a wider crackdown on climate activism in Europe. Governments face a tough choice between safety and free speech. Windl’s case could affect environmental activism in the EU. Supporters are speaking out online, saying the state is overstepping its bounds.
